McGill and China: building partnerships across the Pacific

Welcome to the official website for the McGill University Hong Kong/Mainland China Representative Office!

Established in March 2010 and based in Hong Kong, the office and its director, Alvin Chung, MA’99, represent McGill in all its alumni, development, recruitment, research and corporate partnership initiatives across Hong Kong and Mainland China. In addition, we help McGill’s Faculties – with a special emphasis on Medicine, Engineering, Management, Science, Law and Arts – plan their events in Hong Kong and Mainland China and connect with their graduates and friends in the region.

Our mandate

The McGill University Hong Kong/Mainland China Representative Office is the University’s ambassador in the region – expanding its reputation, engaging parents and future students, and developing initiatives and programs that will benefit McGill students, both in Montreal and China. The office also works closely with local business and alumni leaders to help returning grads expand their personal networks and create new professional opportunities.

McGill attracts students from more than 150 countries around the world. Almost half of the University’s students claim a first language other than English, with more than 6,800 international students making up almost 20 per cent of the student body.

The University’s 200,000 graduates form a vast global network, with many alumni reaching the top of their professions as leaders of industry, award-winning authors and musicians, astronauts and Nobel Prize winners.

Strong ties to Asia

McGill has extensive connections to Hong Kong and China. From Norman Bethune’s innovative medical work in China during the late 1930s (the legendary doctor received his surgical training at the McGill-affiliated Royal Victoria Hospital) to dozens of present-day research collaborations and student exchange programs, the University continues to invest in Asia and benefit from its warm relations with leading institutions, thinkers and professionals in both Hong Kong and Mainland China.

One of the best indicators of this dynamic relationship can be seen in McGill’s popularity among Chinese students. In 2009, over 430 students from China and Hong Kong were registered at McGill, ranking the country third, behind only the United States and France, in terms of international representation among McGill’s student body.

And many McGill alumni have returned or moved to China and Hong Kong, contributing to the country’s rich cultural and professional environment. All told, the University counts a large number of graduates, parents and friends in the region: approximately 1,700 in Hong Kong and 700 in Mainland China.

Helping the next generation

McGill graduates and corporations in Hong Kong and Mainland China recently increased their support for students by expanding one financial aid program and creating two new ones at the University. The following three initiatives aim to give deserving young people from China the opportunity to receive a world-class education at McGill, Canada’s premier university.

• McGill Hong Kong and Mainland China Fund – An expansion of the financial aid program established in 1987 by members of the McGill Society of Hong Kong, this fund grants bursary assistance and/or scholarships to deserving McGill students from Hong Kong and Mainland China who are studying in any Faculty.

• McGill Hong Kong/Mainland China Entrance Scholarship – Based on academic merit, this scholarship provides financial assistance to outstanding students from Hong Kong and Mainland China, who are entering any undergraduate program at McGill. The minimum amount required to a fund a scholarship is $6,000 CAD per year for at least four years. If a donor or corporation funds the entire amount, the scholarship could be named for that individual or organization.

• McGill Hong Kong/Mainland China Bursary – Based on demonstrated financial need and good academic standing, this bursary supports students from Hong Kong and Mainland China who are registered in any undergraduate program at McGill. The minimum amount required to a fund a bursary is $4,000 CAD per year for at least four years.  If a donor or corporation funds the entire amount, the scholarship could be named for that individual or organization.
