The transition from high school, CEGEP or another university to McGill can be a challenging experience. That’s why the McGill Alumni Association (MAA) created the Send-Offs Program.
Held every summer in cities around the world, Send-Offs are a great way for incoming McGill students to meet other freshmen from their area before leaving for Montreal. Last year, we hosted close to 2,000 people at Send-Offs in 48 cities across North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia – and our first ever Web Send-Off in Africa. See the photos >>
Send-Offs are open to incoming McGill students and their parents. In relaxed settings like cafés, restaurants and the homes of local volunteers, our Send-Offs guests hear invaluable first-hand accounts of university life from current students and alumni, while getting answers to any remaining questions they might have about their first year at McGill. There are even prizes to win!
In addition, Send-Offs offer an opportunity for new McGill moms and dads to ask their own questions and connect with fellow parents from the local community.
Parents are automatically invited to all events held by their local branch as soon as they’ve signed up for the Parents Association.
We are finalizing details for many of our 2013 Send-Offs, and incoming students will receive an email invitation in the coming weeks. You can register via this website. See the schedule and register >>
If so, you and your peers get a special Send-Off. You should receive an email from McGill in Mind, inviting you to register for the CEGEP Students Information Session (CSI McGill) on June 3, 2013. Coordinated by the First-Year Office in conjunction with the McGill Alumni Association, this session is intended for CEGEP students who have confirmed their acceptance to McGill. To register for this event, please log in to McGill in Mind. For more information on CSI McGill, contact the First-Year Office.
Our Send-Offs could not happen without the tremendous efforts of the organizers in each city. These alumni, parent and student volunteers work to ensure the newest members of the McGill community feel welcome.
Interested in volunteering for Send-Offs? Please email us with your name, city and phone number at sendoff [dot] alumni [at] mcgill [dot] ca.
Are you a born leader? Let us know if you’d be interested in a leadership role in organizing Send-Off events and helping to mentor and coordinate other volunteers. We also welcome your tips and hints on what a new student needs to know!
We are always on the lookout for alumni, students or parents to host a Send-Off in their area. Hosts serve as the lead organizers for these events, acting as the MAA’s local point person. Duties include scouting and securing a venue, confirming a date, managing volunteers, and general event logistics.
Send-Off hosts receive access to a special toolkit for planning their event and the full support of MAA staff in Montreal. If you are interested in hosting a Send-Off, email us at sendoff [dot] alumni [at] mcgill [dot] ca.
