Dear Alumni and Friends,

Winter has settled in the Ottawa region, with its accompanying cold temperatures.  Therefore, the McGill Alumni Association of Ottawa decided to fight back and organize activities meant to stimulate and excite us all. All of our events are organized with the purpose of meeting fellow McGillians from all graduating classes and having fun in a relaxed atmosphere.

Such organized activities range from our traditional Martini Social in January, to our pool night in April. In February, brave the cold weather and join us for a night of karaoke. Sport enthusiasts can sign up for an afternoon of curling or warm-up in the chalet during a day of cross-country skiing.  Or else, be a tourist in your own city and visit “Laurier House”.

When April swings around, put your mental skills to the test with our speaker event:  come and be quizzed by Dr. David Harpp, professor of the popular “World of Chemistry” series.  Be warned:  old rivalries may flare!

Our speed networking event, scheduled for May, is intended to bring together people from all professional communities to share and exchange career tips, leads or just provide an opportunity to understand what each do, day in, day out… Or else join us in June for our Annual Dinner (formerly AGM), a great way to reconnect with fellow alumni over a nice dinner and enjoy a special guest speaker.

The Association’s board members are always exploring new ways to entertain and activities that would appeal to our alumni members.  We always welcome your suggestions and ideas for events. If you’d like to be part of the branch executive, or volunteer at an event, don’t hesitate to email us.

On that note, I’d like to thank everyone who’s made my two-year term as President easier and so much fun. My term comes to an end in June, and it was a pleasure working with my executive team, fellow board members, and McGill Alumni HQ. I truly enjoyed organizing activities for the Ottawa alumni fellowship and meeting as many of you as possible.

Happy New Year, and I look forward to meeting and socializing with you all!

Ottawa McGill Alumni Choir (OMAC)

The Ottawa McGill Alumni Choir formed in 2005, and has been under the leadership of Choir Director Joanne “Jodi” Tait (BMus'94) since 2006.  Ellen Fry has accompanied the choir on piano since 2009.

OMAC prepares a diverse repertoire of music, ranging from classical to spiritual to pop, with the overall goal of providing a relaxed and fun musical experience for its members.

The Choir holds twice yearly concerts in December and June for friends and family, and has also performed for the McGill Annual General Meeting, at charity events, in particular for the local “Poets’ Pathway” initiative, in seniors’ residences and for the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO).

At the start of each session OMAC opens its doors to new members, including Ottawa-based McGill Alumni as well as their family and friends.  All ages are welcome and musical experience is not required to join – just a passion for singing!
