2010 Branch of the Year

Congratulations to the McGill Alumni Association of Vancouver, winner of the 2010 Charles Peters Branch of the Year Award. Branch President Brandi Sundby, BA’04, accepted the award on the Branch’s behalf at the McGill Honours and Awards Banquet on Tuesday, May 18.

Mission: why we exist

To encourage local alumni, students, parents, and friends of McGill University to maintain their contact with the University and each other for their shared benefit and for the continuing vital support and advancement of McGill.

Objectives: what we need to do to pursue our mission

  • Advocacy – We want to be leaders in encouraging support for McGill University.
  • Relationships – We create opportunities for alumni and friends to develop mutually beneficial relationships among each other and with the University, with a specific focus on networking events.
  • Giving back – We want to support our local community by way of an annual event in conjunction with a local charity or city group, preferably with a McGill connection.
  • New student support – We are committed to continuing our bursary program and contest for incoming students in conjunction with our branch’s annual Send-Off event in August. We strive to create and nurture alumni/student relationships.

Strategic initiatives: how we are going to achieve our objectives

  • We will aim to achieve a minimum profit of 10% (of costs) in each event, with 100% of these proceeds benefiting the bursary program.
  •  We will host one community event in which alumni volunteer their time toward a community service of the Board’s choice.

Dear Alumni and Friends,

In addition to our locally hosted events, I’d like to remind you of a couple of other opportunities for graduates, parents and friends to stay in touch with McGill.

For 90 years now, graduates have been returning to campus to get reacquainted with classmates and friends at special Homecoming activities. Parents joined the tradition in 2007, making the weekend’s feeling of a “family reunion” stronger than ever. Through dozens of lectures, receptions and tours, visitors find out what’s new in on campus and in the faculties. Deans, professors and students are always proud to show off the latest classroom technology or share details of groundbreaking research.

And it’s always fun to visit Montreal, one of McGill’s secret weapons in attracting students. But it may not be so secret anymore: a QS poll has just ranked Montreal #10 among the world’s “Best Student Cities,” the only North American city to place in the top ten. Vancouver, which tied with Mexico City for 31st, scored extremely high on quality of life, but – no surprise – placed very low in the category of affordability.

If you graduated in a year ending in a 2 or 7, this is your “anniversary year” and you may want to consider making a sentimental journey to revisit old haunts. If you’re not sure of the date of your graduation, contact the Alumni Association via email (info [dot] alumni [at] mcgill [dot] ca) or call toll-free 1-800-567-5175 to clarify. Homecoming and Parents Weekend takes place from October 11 to 14.

Also in the fall, Vancouver grads will be treated to a visit from Principal Heather Munroe-Blum, as part of a worldwide “Passport to the Future” tour. She will share some of the ways McGill’s campaign has had an impact on the University and the exciting new opportunities that the support of alumni and friends have helped create. Dates are still being determined, so stay tuned.

And as usual, your branch will be offering an array of events that we hope will interest you. Remember, we’re always glad to hear from you with suggestions for activities. Volunteers are the engines that keep our branches running, so if you have any time or expertise to offer, let us know. It doesn’t have to be a major commitment; sometimes just having a few people to welcome guests at a single event is all we need.

Enclosed are details of upcoming activities for alumni and friends in the Vancouver area.

We look forward to seeing you.
